Kawaii Interview: Michelle

Interview with my friend who is Japanese-American. She is currently studying abroad in Japan! Kawaii!

1. What generation are you in america?
1st generation american, 2nd generation japanese.

2. do you keep up with the fads/fashion/pop culture in japan and if so, how? (through what means)
I do keep up with fashion by shopping and reading magazines

3. What differences do you see in the japanese fashion from american fashion?
I think that japanese fashion and american fashion are starting to become similar, but japanese fashion is more conservative.

4. have you ever been to japan? If so, how was it different?
Yes i have been to japan, i come here once a year. its hard to explain but the fashion here is just more "japanese" and conservative and they like a lot of "cutesy" stuff.

5.Does japanese pop culture have a big influence on japanese fashion?
To some extent, it does have an influence because many people like anime, and you can tell when some clothes is like anime, but in general, the boys dress really metro with man bags and girls dress cutesy and conservative.

6. Who are some (or your) japanese fashion icons?
I currently have none but alot of Japanese look at Anime characters as their fashion icons.

7. Do you feel any social pressure to dress american here? if so, how?
I do not feel any social pressure to dress american.. i honestly dress the way i wanna dress without feeling any pressure or judgement. but unlike american, in japan, you definitely cannot go to school in like pajamas or sweats or some shit or it just looks really bad. so in that case, i do dress somewhat casual but thats just in japan. in america, i dont really care because everyone does it.
